ARIEL

THE BIRTH OF ARIEL DETERGENT

Ariel Detergent was released by Procter & Gamble in 1967. Ariel was created in Europe at P&G's European Technology Centre in Belgium and was originally released only in Europe. It was marketed as a high-sudsing detergent specially formulated to clean and brighten white fabrics. Ariel's popularity grew quickly, and within two years of its release, it was distributed nationwide across the United Kingdom. A few years later, Procter & Gamble introduced a low-sudsing version of Ariel designed specifically for automatic washing machines, allowing the brand to serve both traditional hand-washing households and consumers adopting modern automatic laundry appliances.

EXPANDING WORLDWIDE

Through extensive television advertising and in-store promotional campaigns, Ariel rapidly expanded into households throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Television advertisements most commonly featured Ariel competing against another leading detergent brand, demonstrating its superior cleaning performance. A liquid version of Ariel was later released in 1985, followed a few years later by Ariel Color, a bleach-free detergent specially formulated to clean and protect colored fabrics while helping preserve their brightness. As Ariel's product line expanded, so did its distribution, becoming available in countries such as Pakistan and India. In 2001, Ariel made history by releasing the world's first pre-measured single-dose liquid detergent capsules. Ariel has since become a staple in more than 100 countries and remains one of Procter & Gamble's leading laundry detergent brands, celebrated for its innovative formulas, exceptional cleaning power, and lasting impact on fabric care.
