BUCK-A-ROO
STACK IT… IF YOU DARE
Buck-a-roo was created in 1970 by Julius Cooper and produced by the Ideal Toy Company. The game features a plastic mule named Roo, and players take turns carefully placing various items onto the mule's back. As objects are added to Roo’s back, the weight adds up until he kicks up his back legs, sending all of the pieces flying. The player who causes the mule to kick is eliminated from the game, and the last player standing wins. Buck-a-roo was created to offer a 3-D game made of plastic that did not take a long time to set up like Mouse Trap, and it did exactly that. The game's simple rules and exciting action made it an immediate hit, helping Buck-a-roo sell more than 250,000 units during its first holiday season.
A TOY BOX CLASSIC
WITH A KICK
Buck-a-roo was so popular that factory production was immediately increased globally. The Ideal Toy Company sold hundreds of thousands of units worldwide within the game's first few years of release. In 1984, the rights to Buck-a-roo were acquired by Milton Bradley, who updated the game with a redesigned brown mule and a new collection of accessories and tools to stack on its back. Buck-a-roos publishing rights were then transferred over to Hasbro when the company acquired Milton Bradley in 1991. More than five decades after its debut, Buck-a-roo remains in production by Hasbro in limited quantities and is still a classic game today.
