DYMO was founded by Rudolph Hurwich in 1958 in Berkeley, California. The company became famous for its handheld embossing label makers, which pressed raised white letters into brightly colored plastic tape using a simple mechanical wheel and trigger system released in 1958. Originally developed for industrial and commercial identification, DYMO label makers quickly became a staple product in schools, offices, and homes, where they were used to label files, bins, storage containers, shelves, tools, and household items. The ease of use and durability of the embossed labels helped make DYMO one of the most recognizable office supply brands of the twentieth century.
Throughout the following decades, DYMO expanded beyond its famous embossing label makers to produce electric label makers, thermal printers, shipping scales, and postage systems. The introduction of the Label Writer series in 1998 allowed businesses to quickly print address labels, shipping labels, barcodes, and name badges directly from their computers without ink or toner. After joining Newell Brands in 2005, DYMO continued to supply labeling products for homes, offices, warehouses, laboratories, and industrial facilities around the world. Today, DYMO continues to help people organize and identify anything and everything they would need.
