JACK SPRAT
FROM NURSERY RHYME
TO GROCERY SHELF
Jack Sprat was introduced by a meatpacking firm out of Chicago, Illinois called “Swift & Company” in 1929. The product line originally started off with producing canned pork and beans before expanding the line to include vegetables, soups, chili, spaghetti, and other canned goods. The Jack Sprat brand became very popular in households because of its shelf life, affordability, and convenience. The iconic brand name came from a famous English nursery rhyme character, Jack Sprat, who was commonly associated with simple and wholesome meals, making it an appealing choice for food brands.
CANNED GOOD LEGACY
The Jack Sprat line benefited greatly and proved to be very successful during the twentieth century due to Swift & Company’s reputation in the food industry, since they were one of the nation’s largest producers. The colorful packaging and variety of prepared goods, paired with the familiar Jack Sprat name and mascot, were purchased off the shelves for decades. Unfortunately, the Jack Sprat brand eventually disappeared from the marketplace. Although consumer preferences and the demand for canned goods have shifted, the nostalgia and reminder the Jack Sprat brand has left behind of convenience and easy-prepared food won’t be forgotten.
