KROGER

THE BUISNESS BUILT ON QUALITY

The Kroger brand was founded out of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1883 by Bernard Henry Koger when he invested his entire life savings of $372 into a neighborhood grocery store. Bernard focussed the Kroger brand on quality, purity, and dependability because he firmly believed that he should not sell any product that he wouldn’t buy for his own family. At the time, Kroger was one of the only companies to operate their own bakeries, meat-processing facilities, and dairy plants. Bernard pushed for this because he wanted to control every stage of food production, and unlike many grocers, he did. Kroger rapidly expanded throughout the Midwest while continuing to produce high quality products, proving Bernard's innovative approach to be very successful.

FROM CORNER STORE TO COUNTRY STAPLE

By the year 1916, Kroger adopted the self-service shopping style, allowing the customers to directly grab products off the shelves instead of the clerk doing so. Kroger grew into one of the largest and most successful supermarket brands in the United States, testing electronic scanners and manufacturing private label items. The company officially expanded coast to coast when they merged with Dillon Companies, establishing supermarkets, fueling stations, pharmacies, and other facilities across the country. Kroger still remains as one of the country’s biggest supermarket chains today, serving millions of customers every day, and keeping Bernard Henry Kroger’s dream alive.
