HOW OREO BECAME A CLASSIC
Oreo was created by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) on March 6, 1912, and is now the best-selling cookie in the world. The famous sandwich-style cookie consists of two chocolate wafers with a sweet cream filling in between. Oreo was directly inspired by the 1908 Hydrox cookie, with the same look but described as a crunchier cookie with a slightly tangy filling.
THE WORLD’S
BEST-SELLING COOKIE
Oreos were originally sold in bulk at 25 cents per pound, packaged in novelty metal canisters with clear glass lids. Oreo soon went international 16 years after its release, as Nabisco started exporting it to Spanish-speaking countries in Central and Latin America. By 2017, over 40 billion Oreo cookies were being made each year across 18 countries worldwide. Since the original release, Oreo has created multiple different flavors like the golden vanilla Oreo, birthday cake, carrot cake, and so on.
