SKIPPY
THE SPREAD THAT REVOLUTIONIZED PEANUT BUTTER
Skippy Peanut Butter was introduced in 1932 by food salesman Joseph L. Rosefield in Alameda, California. Rosefield invented and patented a process that partially hydrogenated peanut oil, creating a smooth, creamy peanut butter that resisted oil separation, stayed fresh longer, and was easier to spread, making it stand out from other brands at the time. Skippy quickly became popular with American families, generating enough profit to expand its product line. In 1934, the company successfully introduced the first commercially successful crunchy-style peanut butter.
WIDESPREAD SUCCESS
Shortly after the release of its crunchy peanut butter, Skippy became the first brand to package peanut butter in wide-mouth jars, making it cleaner and easier for consumers to access the product. A major milestone came in 1955 when Best Foods purchased the Rosefield Packing Company, helping expand Skippy's business. Skippy continued to introduce new products, including Reduced Fat Creamy and Super Chunky peanut butter in 1994, followed by Skippy Natural Peanut Butter Spread in 2005. Skippy was acquired by Hormel Foods in 2013, expanding its global distribution while preserving its signature recipe and classic blue label. Under Hormel's ownership, Skippy introduced P.B. Bites in 2016, P.B. Fruit Bites in 2018, convenient individual Squeeze Packs in 2019, and Skippy Squeeze, along with No Sugar Added and other specialty varieties. Today, Skippy stands among the world's best-known peanut butter brands, with products sold in more than 30 countries and a legacy of innovation that has influenced the peanut butter industry for generations.
