SUPER SUDS
A NEW ERA IN LAUNDRY CARE
Super Suds laundry detergent was created by Colgate & Company in 1927 as one of the first synthetic heavy duty laundry detergents marketed to American consumers. Super Suds was developed using the soap-flaking process of Charles H. Lamont, Super Suds produced abundant suds and offered improved cleaning performance compared with many traditional soap flakes available at the time. The detergent was promoted as a faster, more effective laundry product capable of removing dirt while producing rich, long-lasting suds. Through extensive newspaper advertisements, magazine campaigns, and colorful point-of-sale displays, Super Suds quickly became one of Colgate's best-known household cleaning products during the late 1920s and 1930s.
THE LASTING IMPACT OF SUPER SUDS
Throughout the following decades, Super Suds remained a popular laundry detergent as Colgate continued improving its soap and household cleaning products. After the 1928 merger of Colgate with Palmolive-Peet, the detergent became part of the newly formed Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company, benefiting from expanded manufacturing and nationwide distribution. The success of Super Suds helped establish Colgate as one of the leading manufacturers of laundry products before newer synthetic detergents gradually replaced soap-based formulas after World War II. Although Super Suds was eventually discontinued, it remains an important example of the transition from traditional laundry soaps to the modern detergents used today.
