SURF

A NEW WAVE IN DETERGENT

Surf washing powder was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1952 by Crosfields of Warrington, a subsidiary company of Lever Brothers. The detergent brand was launched nationally across the U.K. within a year and later expanded into international markets, including the United States and India in 1959. At the time of its introduction, only about 1 percent of British households owned an electric washing machine, so Lever Brothers heavily promoted Surf as a modern all-in-one detergent that cleaned and whitened clothes without the need for separate bleaching agents. One of the brand's earliest and most prominent slogans was "Surf boils spotless. Spotless-white," emphasizing its whitening power and convenience.

CLEANING UP THE COMPETITION

In the 1970s, Surf introduced Surf Automatic, a version designed specifically for use in the new automatic washing machines that were becoming increasingly popular and common in homes. Surf Automatic quickly became one of the company's most successful laundry products, generating millions of pounds in sales and helping solidify Unilever's position in the detergent market. Unlike many traditional detergents, Surf Automatic produced fewer suds and foam, making it better suited for automatic washing machines. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Surf continued to evolve with improved cleaning formulas, concentrated detergents, and a growing variety of fragrances. The brand continued to adapt to modern laundry trends by expanding beyond traditional washing powders to include liquid detergents, capsules, and more sustainable product formulations. Today, Surf is the number-one powder and fragrance detergent brand in the U.K., remaining one of Unilever's longest-running detergent brands. It also remains one of the top five detergent brands across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
