THE BIRTH OF TUNNOCKS
Thomas Tunnock Limited ( Tunnock's) is a Scottish confectionery company based in Uddingston, Scotland. Originally a bakery founded in 1890, the Tunnocks bakery made cakes, bread rolls, and pies. It remained an average bakery until the 1950s, when Tunnocks was passed down to Thomas's grandson, Boyd Tunnock, who transitioned the bakery to an international confectionery giant.
TUNNOCKS THROUGH THE YEARS
Tunnocks has created several iconic top-selling products, including their Caramel Wafer, created in 1947, a layered biscuit of crisp wafers, caramel, and milk chocolate, sold for 1d (£sd) created during post-war rationing. At the time, each biscuit was hand-wrapped by employees in its distinctive red and white foil. Followed by the Snowball in 1952, containing a soft marshmallow coated in chocolate and coconut, adding texture to the product line. Tunnocks' second best-selling confection product is their famous tea cake, combining a shortbread base with a marshmallow dome and chocolate coating, sold for 2d (£sd). The popularity of the tea cakes led to Tunnocks’ expansion to other major countries like Canada and Japan. Tunnocks now produces over 500 million biscuits a year and is exported to over 40 countries around the globe.
