WHIZ
Whiz Auto Products was founded in 1888 in Camden, New Jersey, by Richard M. Hollingshead Sr. Whiz originally produced harness soap for horses but switched to automotive products to capitalize on horse-drawn carriages being replaced by cars. In the early 1900s, Whiz released its first catalog of automotive products consisting of automotive chemicals, soaps, greases, and sealers. The company successfully adapted to the rapidly growing automotive industry and became closely connected to the rise of American automobile ownership and highway transportation. The Whiz brand was officially acquired by Malco Products, Inc. in 1982
THE BIRTH OF WHIZ
WHIZ THROUGH THE YEARS
In the early 1930s, Richard Hollingshead Jr., general sales manager for Whiz Automotive Products, got the idea for the modern drive-in movie theater. His inspiration came from his mother, who found movie theater seating too small and uncomfortable. Seeking a more accessible and comfortable viewing experience. Looking to create a more comfortable and accessible experience, Hollingshead created a new form of entertainment that incorporated the booming car business, where people could enjoy films while staying inside their own cars. He made the prototype in his backyard, strapping a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car. He then projected film onto a sheet nailed to trees with a radio behind it. Hollingshead opened the first drive-in theater on June 6, 1933.
